The days of privacy and American freedoms are officially over. Well, they have been since 2007, but we are just finding about it now. Apparently, the National Security Agency began a program under the Bush administration which gives them access to pretty much everything we do on a daily basis. These include getting information from our Facebook accounts, Skype conversations, AOL emails, and even listening to the phone calls that we make on Verizon Wireless. It is truly a sick invasion of rights, and it shows that over the last decades, our government has tried little by little to tear the rights that we were guaranteed by our founding fathers out of our hands.
While George Bush began the program, Barack Obama has followed in the footsteps of his predecessor and continued violating the rights of American citizens by constantly monitoring everything they do. Yep, the “hope and change” President has officially become George W.’s “mini me”. While it would have been great for him to really bring about all the hoopla of hope he talked about on the campaign trail, the fact is that he is a politician, and violating their people’s rights is what politicians do best. It’s a sad state of affairs, but it’s the reality in modern America.
Obama and Bush aren’t the only ones responsible for this sick violation of privacy. While defending the program today, Obama let it be known that Congress has been briefed on the program regularly since it began. He used this as an excuse to legitimize the program, but just because you share the fact that you are violating individuals’ rights with your “den of thieves” colleagues on Capitol Hill doesn’t make what you do acceptable. Congress, after all, is suppose to represent their constituency, and the fact that they didn’t inform their people of this gross injustice just reinforces the fact that they are liars, cheats, and thieves.
I’m not the only one who thinks this though. Media outlets, both liberal and conservative, have been sharing their outrage over the program. The New York Times, the Obama administration’s media mouthpiece, stated that ,”Obama has lost all credibility on the issue.” Meanwhile, conservatives in the media are having a field day crucifying Obama over the issue. As a conservative, I see their point, but the fact is the program happened under the Bush administration and both Democratic and Republican Congresses knew about it. Thus, it’s not just Obama’s fault, it’s the fault of every politician in Washington who knew about it and said nothing when they had the chance.
They won’t apologize for the program though. Obama’s insistence that the program was fair and will continue showed their unapologetic attitude about PRISM program, and it showed that we need to make sure they know this is not okay. We have been having our rights taken away for way too long, and we may be living in the same type of country our ancestor’s fled from if we don’t take action. After all, silence lets those in authority know that they can do whatever they want, but when we speak up and have our voices heard they will know that their actions are unacceptable and will not be tolerated.
May God Bless America,
